Renewable Energy 5-Day Intensive
This event starts on: 8/30/2004 and lasts 5 days

This course combines a number of our most popular classes into a single 5-day package. Pick and choose the classes you want at the normal daily rate, or sign up for the whole package and receive a special discount. There is a two-day class immediately following this one -- Solar Electric 101: Introduction to Photovoltaics -- on Sept. 4 and 5 that you may also want to take.

Day 1 (Aug. 30) - Conservation and Efficiency
Before you spend money on new energy systems, you can save money by increasing the efficiency of your home or business by performing an energy audit.

Day 2 (Aug. 31) - Solar Power 101
An overview of solar power

Day 3 (Sept. 1) - Wind
The fastest growing RE in the world.

Day 4 (Sept. 2) - Solar Hot Water
Learn how you can save money by providing a substantial amount of your hot water needs with free energy from the sun. This course is designed to provide how-to knowledge on all aspects of the design and installation of residential solar hot water systems. Course includes determining the actual amount of solar energy available at a given location, with a realistic assessment of system cost vs. predicted system payback. Domestic hot water systems, pool/spa/hot tub systems, and space heating systems will be addressed. Design issues will include collector location, orientation, tilt, storage volume, pipe runs, insulation, and mechanical/control components. A comprehensive survey of the different types of systems available will focus on suitability to different climates and applications. Code issues and selection of contractors will be covered. A tour of working solar hot water systems at the Solar Living Center is included.

Day 5 (Sept. 3) - Biodiesel - Fuel from Vegetables
Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, non-toxic and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics. It can be used in existing diesel engines with no noticeable loss in performance. Biodiesel is proven to reduce unhealthy emissions associated with petroleum and it does not contribute to global warming. This renewable fuel offers an immediate opportunity to improve air quality and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. In this hands-on class, learn the process of making fuel from restaurant "waste" oil, and discover how to build your own small-scale.

Workshop Cancellation Policy: Any cancellation (or course change) made by a student prior to two (2) weeks from workshop date will be charged a $40 fee. Cancellations made within two (2) weeks of workshop date are non-refundable. Registration fees for workshops cancelled by the Solar Living Institute will be refunded in full.
