House Republicans Ask for Bipartisan Support from the Democratic Leadership on the Energy Bill

WASHINGTON, Apr 19, 2005 -- U.S. Newswire

Since the 109th Congress began, House Republicans have worked across the aisle and welcomed the support of rank-and-file Democrats. This week, House Republicans plan to bring to the floor an energy bill that will help lower the price of gas and reduce our dependence on foreign sources of oil.

"Getting an energy bill passed is one of the most important things this Congress can do," said House Speaker Hastert (R-IL). "It's important because this bill will create jobs, it will help keep our nation secure, but most importantly, it will help ease the financial burden millions of Americans face today at the pump."

Hastert continued: "It is my hope the House and Senate Democratic Leadership will put politics aside and vote for a good energy bill that will eventually help alleviate the high gas prices Americans face when they fill their automobiles."

On five major pieces of legislation the House has voted on since the 109th Congress convened, some of the 202 House Democrats have seen that Republicans have an agenda that is producing real results for real Americans.

-- Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Prevention Act, 302 "yeas" (229 Republicans, 73 Democrats. Leader Pelosi voted "no,")

-- The Death Tax Repeal Permanency Act, 272 "yeas" (230 Republicans, 42 Democrats. Leader Pelosi voted "no,")

-- The Class Action Fairness Act, 279 "yeas" (229 Republicans, 50 Democrats. Leader Pelosi voted "no,")

-- The REAL ID Act, 261 "yeas" (219 Republicans, 42 Democrats. Leader Pelosi voted "no,")

-- Continuity in Congress, 329 "yeas" (206 Republicans, 122 Democrats. Leader Pelosi voted "no.")

House Republicans are optimistic they will again enjoy bipartisan support. In 2004 when the House voted on this bill it passed by a vote of 244-178. In 2003 when the House voted on H.R. 6, The Energy Policy Act of 2003, it passed by a vote of 247-145. The bill the House will vote on this week enjoyed bipartisan support in the Committee with one-third of Committee Democrats voting in support of the Chairman's mark.
