Australia's wind energy industry in danger of stalling

CANBERRA, Jun 30, 2005 -- Asia In Focus

Australia's wind energy industry is in danger of stalling with government incentives running out fast, according to Greenpeace International's climate policy director, Steve Sawyer, who is currently visiting Australia. Greenpeace and the Global Wind Energy Council have recently released an updated Wind Force 12 report on the wind energy industry, which shows wind is on track to save 11 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas pollution by the year 2020.

* However, Sawyer warned that without legislated targets to achieve 20 per cent renewable energy by 2020, Australia's clean energy industry would not be able to compete with those in China, Europe and the United States, where similar targets are in place.

* Australian Wind Energy Association chief executive Dominique La Fontaine said the report demonstrated the clear need for Australia to develop a stronger wind energy industry
