Ontario reports record power use

TORONTO -- The hot weather continues to push Ontario's supply of electricity to the limit.

A record for the month of July was set Monday at 25,506 megawatts.

That's about 300 megawatts higher than the previous record for this month set on July 3, 2002.

Monday's demand, however, was short of the all-time record of 26,157 megawatts set just a couple of weeks ago.

Terry Young of the Independent Electricity System Operator says Tuesday's heat could establish yet another record in Ontario.

He says the system is expected to be churning out some 26,130 megawatts of power by late afternoon.

Young says the numbers remain high because air conditioners continue to draw vast amounts of electricity.

He suggests people restrict heavy electricity usage until after 8 p.m. when demand is lower.
