Fuel Cell Keeps Power Going During Russian Blackout

May 31 - PRNewswire-FirstCall

Similar to the 2003 New York City power outage whereby a UTC Power fuel cell kept the Central Park police station operating, last week's blackout in Russia again demonstrated that independent fuel cell systems can provide uninterrupted power during widespread electrical grid failures. Russia's leading oil and gas pipeline engineering company, Orgenergogaz, never lost power at one of its facilities on May 25 because of its PureCell(TM) 200 system from UTC Power, a division of United Technologies Corp. .

"While the power outage disrupted traffic, interrupted water supplies, and forced offices to close all around us, we continued operating as usual," Alexey Kolpakov, acting general director of Orgenergogaz, said. "This alone justified our investment in the PureCell(TM) 200. We were the first Russian company to use this power system, but after this, I'm sure many more will join us."

The PureCell(TM) 200 power solution is a clean, efficient, reliable fuel cell power plant that produces 200kW of electricity and up to 925,000 Btu/hr of heat for combined heat and power (CHP) applications. It meets the strictest emission standards and operates quietly on site.

"We're helping customers take control of their own energy destiny," UTC Power President Jan van Dokkum said. "Orgenergogaz avoided the problems associated with utility outages in a seamless, effective and environmentally responsible manner."

Orgenergogaz is a subsidiary of Gazprom, the largest gas producing company in the world, whose core operations are gas exploration, production, transportation, processing and marketing. Orgenergogaz is Russia's leading oil and gas pipeline engineering company, and operates both in Russia and abroad. For more than 30 years, its highly qualified specialists have provided gas infrastructure maintenance services throughout Russia.
