Region tries to cut energy bill

Officials in six local governments announced Tuesday that they are hiring a consultant to solicit proposals for the purchase of electricity starting in October.

The plan, announced by Baltimore County Executive James T. Smith Jr., is estimated to save the municipalities $500,000 to $600,000 in the first year.

Baltimore City and Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Harford, Howard and Carroll counties are all participating. Baltimore-based energy consulting firm South River Consulting is being paid $12,500 a month to run the purchasing process.
