Russian power grid boss wants foreigners to control generating companies

Moscow, Jun 20, 2005 -- BBC Monitoring

Anatoliy Chubays, head of the Unified Energy System of Russia joint-stock company, would like to see foreign companies gain control of three to four generating companies that are being set up as part of the energy sector reform. He expressed his preference in Moscow on Monday [20 June] at the annual investors' conference "Russia Today: Risks and Opportunities", which is organized by the Renessans Kapital investment group.

"I believe it would be right for foreign strategic investors to buy a controlling interest in at least three or four generating companies," he said. "We will draft proposals to that effect," Chubays said, adding that the joint-stock company was conducting "intense negotiations" with foreign investors.
