Berlin: Environment Minister Juergen Trittin (Greens) has sharply criticized Ukraine's plans to build 11 new nuclear power plants. "If Ukraine really wants to liberalize its energy market, this alleged nuclear programme is a great deal of hot air," Trittin told Berliner Zeitung (10 May edition), according to a prereleased report. In fact, every country makes its own decision on its energy policy, the Green official said. "Yet the question is how serious the announcement by the national nuclear authority really is. How does a country that has so far not been able to raise the funds for required modifications want to finance the construction of new nuclear power plants," Trittin asked.

Ukraine's nuclear authority had announced at the weekend [7-8 May] that, in addition to two planned nuclear reactors, it wants to build another 11 power plants. They are to be completed by 2030.
