Calpine believes gas will remain primary fuel for US generation

Washington (Platts)--25May2005

Calpine Corp President and CEO Peter Cartwright on Wednesday said he believes
the "vast majority" of US power plants built over the next 20 years will be
fueled by natural gas, but acknowledged his company was looking at a range of
alternative fuels, including petroleum coke for power plants located near oil
refineries. Petroleum coke is a byproduct of the oil refining process.

In remarks at the company's annual shareholders' meeting, Cartwright also said
the company, which is the largest independent power producer in the US,
supports increased liquefied natural gas imports into the US. Calpine operates
roughly 27,000 MW of generating capacity in North America. The large majority
of its generation is gas-fired.
