UK to further climate change knowledge

A new funding package has been announced to improve understanding of climate change impacts in the UK this week. Environment Minister Elliot Morley announced that the £3.5m grant would be awarded to Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute for the world-leading UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP).

The financial backing, claimed Mr Morley, underlines the Government’s commitment to combatting climate change.

The funding will allow UKCIP to develop strategic research on the impacts of climate change across the UK, but also strengthen the role that the programme plays in informing organisations, such as local authorities, businesses and regional government, to prepare themselves for the impacts of climate change.

"This contract shows the importance that Government continues to place on stakeholder-led research into the impacts of climate change, so that public and private sector organisations are able to prepare appropriate adaptation responses," said Morley.
