Biofuel injection facility opens in Pennsylvania

Oct. 31

A new biofuel injection facility opened in Middletown, Pa., this month, allowing companies that fuel their vehicles at the terminal to blend diesel fuel or heating fuel with biofuel.

The terminal will replace 3.2 million gallons of oil with biodiesel, said Gov. Edward G. Rendell. The project is a joint venture between Worley & Obetz and Independence Biofuels Inc.

Middletown is 145 miles southeast of Harrisburg.

A computer at the terminal provides more exact injection blending, allowing customers to dial in the specific blend of biodiesel that their vehicles require. The facility will blend the fuel before it reaches the tanker truck, unlike "splash" blending, a process in which diesel and biofuel are poured separately into a tanker and allowed to mix during transport.
