China's two power grid operators, the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) and the China Southern Power Grid (CSPG), plan to invest 900 billion and 300 billion yuan (US$37.1 billion), respectively, in the building of power grids in the next five years (2006-2010), according to a recent report by the National State Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

This means an average annual investment of 250 billion yuan, as against 138 billion in 2004 and 150 billion in 2005.

Major projects would include two hydropower stations, namely, the 16.2 million kw Xiluodu station and the 6 million kw Xiangjiaba station, one +800kV DC transmission project of the Jinping hydropower station, and a 750kv transmission network in northwest China.

CSPG will build a +800kv DC transmission project within its grid and put into operation 67 million kw of generating capacity. It will also supply electricity to six provinces in the northern part of Vietnam.
