Fla. to dispose of wastewater via underground injection wells

Florida has a new approach to disposing of wastewater through underground injection wells, a move that has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The rule sharply reduces the possibility of drinking water contamination from wastewater injected into deep wells, the EPA said.

The program includes industrial pretreatment of wastewater before it enters water treatment plants. Those treatment plants then add a second level of treatment as well as high-level disinfection to inactive pathogenic organisms.

This allows the wastewater to meet the same state standards for reused wastewater applied on lawns and golf courses, the EPA said.

"This rule helps Florida continue to protect underground sources of drinking water as well as aquatic ecosystems by strengthening pollution prevention and disinfection requirements," said EPA Assistant Administrator of Water Benjamin Grumbles.
