HANOI, Oct 31, 2005 -- Xinhua

Vietnam's biggest electricity producer and sole distributor, Electricity of Vietnam, said Monday it planned to construct 51 power plants from now to 2010.

The construction of new thermoelectric and hydroelectric plants will help boost the country's electricity capacity from current 11,400 mw to some 26,000 mw in 2010, meeting demand for its socio- economic development.

Vietnam will build the Son La hydroelectric plant in northern Son La province with a capacity of 2,400 mw, the biggest of its kind in Southeast Asia, late next month, the state-owned corporation said, noting that the first turbine is scheduled to become operational in late 2010.

Now, 95.4 percent of communes and nearly 91.3 percent of households in Vietnam have access to the national electricity grid, the corporation said.
