RICHMOND, VA., Nov 09, 2005 -- M2 PRESSWIRE

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has approved a proposal by Mirant to test new emissions reduction technology at the Potomac River power plant in Alexandria.

The main component of the testing is injection of a mineral called trona into the gas exhaust of one boiler to help neutralize sulfur dioxide. Mirant is scheduled to conduct the trona injection November 11 through 18, 2005.

DEQ authorized the tests after requiring Mirant to take steps to ensure the accuracy of its procedures and to protect people and the environment in the area of the plant. DEQ staff from the Northern Virginia Regional Office will be at the plant to observe the testing.

DEQ continues to monitor operations at the Alexandria plant and remains in communication with Mirant about efforts to meet air quality standards.
