Gingrich spoke at The Beverly Hills Hotel to a gathering of approximately 200 California civic, business and political leaders as well as celebrities at an industry event hosted by Rinnai Corporation, the leader in tankless water heating technology.

In addition to Gingrich's remarks, guests were presented with the findings of a comprehensive study into what California's building industry can do to be more energy conscious.

The study titled "Energy Conservation for California Builders" which was sponsored by Rinnai and conducted by ConSol, one of the country's largest energy consulting firms, offered five recommendations for builders to consider adopting:

According to the study's authors, if the state's builders adopted all of the recommendations, the energy conserved would equal the amount of electricity generated by 40,000 homes.

Specifically, if every home built in California used a tankless water heater instead of a storage tank water heater, the state could save 132 million gallons of water and reduce the demand for natural gas by 18 million therms, which is equivalent to conserving two months worth of gas use for all new homes each year.

"We need to begin exploring modern approaches to decreasing dependence on foreign energy sources across a range of areas," said Gingrich. "We need to incorporate how homes and buildings are designed and constructed with the appliances and products that are on the inside to make the entire structure as energy efficient as possible. Businesses and builders can play a pivotal role in educating consumers on what types of energy efficient products they should consider putting inside their homes. Becoming energy independent doesn't require huge sacrifices; however, it does demand use of the best available energy efficient technologies, continued innovation and a long-term commitment to changing the way America consumes energy. If we, as individuals, begin to make wiser energy decisions, we can change our country's course and have a safer, more secure tomorrow."

According to estimates from the Energy Information Administration, in just two decades U.S. energy consumption will increase by nearly 40 percent. That is equal to the energy used today in California, Texas, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Illinois.

"There are technologies available today such as the ones presented in the Energy Conservation for California Builders study that are in wide use throughout the world that can help our country assert its energy independence," said Ervin Cash, Vice President, Rinnai North America. "We're grateful to Speaker Gingrich for his insights on the issue of becoming a more energy independent country, and Rinnai looks forward to working with California's building industry and governmental leaders in embracing the study's recommendations."
