In an effort to get more New Jersey consumers to support cleaner electricity, Green Mountain Energy Company today announced that it is offering the lowest rate product in the New Jersey CleanPower Choice Program. This new Green Mountain Energy(R) electricity product is being offered at the introductory rate of 0.9 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), in addition to the local utility's electric generation charges.

The CleanPower Choice Program allows New Jersey electric customers to support renewable electricity without switching from their local utility company. The program was created by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities' Office of Clean Energy. The program began on October 1 in PSE&G and JCP&L territories. The program will expand statewide next spring. Customers will still receive one monthly bill from their local utility. There is no minimum term and no cancellation penalty.

"The choice to support cleaner electricity, just like clean air, should be available to everyone in New Jersey," said John Holtz, Atlantic Region Business Director, Green Mountain Energy Company. "That is why we are introducing this Green Mountain Energy electricity product at a rate of less then a penny per kWh."

Holtz added, "For the average New Jersey residential electric customer using 750 kwh a month, that is less than $7 per month or about the price of a movie ticket."

The Green Mountain Energy electricity product available through the New Jersey program is both 100 percent renewable and 100 percent pollution free, generated by 50 percent regional wind and 50 percent regional small hydro. Buying this Green Mountain Energy electricity product is one of the easiest ways New Jersey customers can help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) air pollution their households normally produce. By purchasing this Green Mountain Energy electricity product for one year, a New Jersey household using 750 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month can avoid contributing 4,900 pounds of CO2 into the air -- as much as a car would produce in about 5,400 miles of driving. That is like driving the full length of the New Jersey Turnpike over 36 times!

Holtz explained that half of the content for Green Mountain Energy electricity in New Jersey will come from the Green Mountain Energy(R) Wind Farm in Pennsylvania. Built in 1999, the Green Mountain Energy Wind Farm was the first utility-scale wind power facility built in the region.

Green Mountain Energy Company has been working to change the way power is made in New Jersey longer than any other electric supplier. The company has been licensed by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities since 1999. Green Mountain Energy Company has an office in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey.
