PHOENIX (AP) --
A problem with an emergency reactor core cooling system
is responsible for shutting down the nation's largest
nuclear power plant. There's no immediate word when the
Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station may be back in
operation.
The plant
provides electricity for as many as four million
customers in California, Arizona, Texas and New Mexico.
It's served by seven utility companies. The power is
cheaper than many other sources, but several power
companies say it's unclear if they'll need to raise
rates to recoup their losses.
The cooling
system problem reportedly went undetected since the
plant began producing power in 1986. The issue was
identified early last week when engineers at the plant
did an analysis in response to questions from the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
