UK Revels in Record Hot October Day
UK: October 28, 2005

LONDON - Temperatures on Thursday rose to their highest ever for an Oct. 27, as a warm front from North Africa spread over Britain.

Temperatures climbed as high as 21.1 degrees Celsius (70 Fahrenheit) in parts of London, surpassing the previous record of 20.3 degrees set in 1888, the Met office said.

The warmest day in the month of October was a decade ago when the mercury reached 29.4 degrees Celsius in Cambridgeshire.

However, clear and sunny skies did not necessarily mean all were able to enjoy the weather.

"It's nice but we have to work," said Renata Slisz, manager of a sandwich shop in London. "It might be a disaster because we don't have an air-conditioner."

In Scotland, temperatures rose to 21 degrees.

But the balmy conditions will leave most of Britain by Friday, and the Met office is expecting rain and slightly cooler weather.
