About 88,000 out in North Carolina as Ophelia drifts northward

Philadelphia (Platts)--15Sep2005
Utilities and cooperatives serving the state of North Carolina reported
Thursday morning that nearly 88,000 customers remain without power after
Hurricane Ophelia battered the state's coast.
About 46,000 Progress Energy Carolina customers in North Carolina remain
without power on Thursday morning as a result of Hurricane Ophelia, down from
53,000 last night, Progress said. Most of the utility's outages are in
Brunswick, Carteret and New Hanover counties.
North Carolina Electric Membership Corp said that about 41,800 customers
served by electric cooperatives in the state have no electric service Thursday
morning, down from "just under 70,000" last night. NCEMC noted that, as the
storm drifts slowly north along the North Carolina coast, co-ops located in
the most southern coastal counties already have started restoring power and
are down to 12,300 outages from a peak of 38,500 outages Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the municipal utility in Southport, North Carolina--the only
muni hit hard by Ophelia on Wednesday--said that it had restored power to
virtually all of the 700 customers who lost power Wednesday. The Southport
muni serves about 2,100 customers. Public Services Director Bob Grant said
Thursday morning that his home is literally the last in the small city that
has not been reconnected.
