Demand drops an estimated 1.4 Bcf/day post-Katrina: US EIA
Washington (Platts)--7Sep2005
Hurricane Katrina reduced natural gas demand by as much 1.4 Bcf/d,
according to estimates published Wednesday by the US Energy Information
Administration.
"Katrina-related natural gas demand reduction is, at most, estimated to
be between 15% and 25% of the peak level of lost production, and, as service
restoration proceeds, should become an increasingly minor factor," the EIA
said.
EIA said the biggest loss of demand came from the industrial sector with
an estimated drop of 0.7 Bcf/d, followed by power generators with an estimated
0.3 to 0.4 Bcf/d of demand loss. Nine closed oil refineries account for 0.25
Bcf/d of estimated demand cuts while residential and commercial customers are
estimated by the EIA to be using 0.1 Bcf/d less than before the storm.
