Global groups develop information portal for renewables

VIENNA, Austria, September 28, 2005 (Refocus Weekly)

Two groups are developing an information portal for renewable energies that will be launched in May, 2006.

The Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) and REN21 (a network established at the international conference for renewables in Bonn last year) are designing an Internet based ‘Information Clearing House’ to provide access to information on renewables and energy efficiency. The project is supported by the British environment department (DEFRA), Dutch environment ministry (MINVROM) and the German ministry for the environment (BMU).

The portal will provide “easy access to high quality information and data on renewable energies” and increase the flow of information “to facilitate the understanding of the roles and activities of the many different initiatives and opportunities” in renewables and energy efficiency. It will also enable users to provide feedback on the usefulness of the data by a rating system.

The system will serve as a repository for data and a link to sources such as the International Energy Agency, and users will be able to search for any data or follow a structured path to access data on various areas and specific categories of interest. The first element of the portal, an ‘Actors Catalogue,’ will be available by the end of October.

“A number of heterogeneous data sources for renewables and energy efficiency exist... but a powerful and comprehensive portal for renewables and energy efficiency does not exist,” say the groups. “Various organizations manage and store information on renewables and energy efficiency” and interested parties must search various sources to receive “useful, trustworthy and up to date information on renewables and energy efficiency.”

The project will be implemented in a phased approach, with the initial focus on renewables and energy efficiency to be included later.

The groups posted an online questionnaire that was designed to involve the maximum number of stakeholder groups in the planning, preparation and structuring of the portal. The form addressed the issues of bioenergy, climate, energy, energy efficiency, environment, geothermal, hydro, solar, wind, heating/cooling and transport/bio fuels.

REEEP is the partnership launched by the UK government at the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development in August 2002.
