USA: September 12, 2005

Hurricane Katrina displaced an estimated one million people and could cost as much as $200 billion, according to some estimates. On Sunday, 14 days after the storm swept ashore to devastate the US Gulf Coast, some figures were available on the impact of the storm and the relief and recovery effort.

* More than 400 people were confirmed dead, mostly in Mississippi where there are 211 and Louisiana with 197. Katrina killed seven people in Florida.

* An estimated 1 million people were displaced by the storm along the US Gulf Coast. About half of those are from New Orleans where nearly all of the 450,000 residents were evacuated.

* Shelters were established at 774 locations across the country to house 248,200 people, said the US Department of Homeland Security, or DHS.

* The American Red Cross says 89,000 evacuees are staying in its shelters, down from 150,000 last week.

* At least 1,220 children separated from their families after the storm are listed on the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children's Web site.

* US authorities say more than 100,000 people have been pulled out of New Orleans, including more than 32,000 rescues and 70,000 evacuations.

* 18.3 million "meals ready to eat" have been distributed, and 40.7 million liters of water provided, DHS said.

* The American Red Cross has distributed more than 6 million hot meals and 5.9 million snacks.

* The Federal Emergency Management Agency said it has distributed $551.5 million in relief aid to nearly 268,000 households in Louisiana, $107.9 million to almost 52,000 Mississippi households and $28.9 million to about 12,000 Alabama households.

* The American Red Cross has received $578 million in gifts and pledges for hurricane relief. It says up to $1.5 billion will be needed. The organization expects to help 1 million families.

* As many as 1,700 animals have been collected at a center set up by the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society and its state branches.

* US Attorneys said 259 prisoners have been booked since Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans at a temporary jail, once home to Greyhound, including 194 for looting, 26 for possession of stolen vehicles and 10 for possession of stolen goods.

* Risk Management Solutions has raised its estimate of total hurricane damages to $125 billion and said it expects insured losses of $40 billion to $60 billion.

* 400,000 jobs could be lost, the Congressional Budget Office said.

* Congress has approved $62.3 billion for hurricane relief.

* Power was restored to two-thirds of Entergy Corp's 1.1 million customers in Mississippi and Louisiana, the company said. 291,784 customers remained without power in Louisiana and 254 in Mississippi.

* There are some 4,000 US Coast Guard, 46,200 National Guard, and 20,000 active duty military personnel on hand in hurricane-affected areas, according to DHS.

* Much of New Orleans remains under 5 feet (1.5 metres) of water, the Louisiana National Guard said.

* Tests of waters in flooded residential areas of New Orleans exceeded by at least 10 times the safe levels of E. coli. They also have high lead levels.
