Mississippi Power restores 14,000; 200,000 still out in Alabama

Birmingham, Alabama (Platts)--1Sep2005
Mississippi Power has restored 14,000 electricity customers mainly around
Meridian, a company spokeswoman said at 8 am CDT Thursday.
A 50-mile section of transmission line was repaired to restore service in
the region, which is north of the coast and away from the hardest-hit area.
Further damage assessments show 700 miles of transmission and
distribution lines down. At least 4,700 poles need to be replaced and
thousands more need repair, company officials said.
Meanwhile, 200,000 Alabama Power customers are without power as of 8:30
am CDT. The most, 127,000, are in Mobile. Another 38,000 are out in Birmingham
and 35,000 in Tuscaloosa, a company spokeswoman said.
Peak outages after Katrina hit the coast on Monday were more than 634,000
in Alabama. The company still is assessing infrastructure damage, and so far
has reported 93 transmission lines are either broken or have trouble, such as
broken cross arms, lines down or insulation issues, the spokeswoman said.
