BOULDER, Colorado, US, September 14, 2005 (Refocus
Weekly)
Open houses are planned for at least 43 states and
the federal District of Columbia, in the tenth annual National Solar
Tour, organized by the American Solar Energy Society with support from
the Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable
Energy.
Thousands of homes, schools and businesses that use solar energy will
open their doors to the public on October 1, and ASES says this year’s
tour will benefit from growing public interest in solar power as energy
prices rise. Last year, the solar tours in hundreds of communities
attracted tens of thousands of visitors.
Tours are held across the U.S. from September until November, with a
focus on National Solar Tour day, the first Saturday of every October,
which is National Energy Awareness Month.
One week later, 15 teams of students from colleges and universities in
the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and Spain will finish building their solar
homes on the National Mall in downtown Washington, at the second Solar
Decathlon sponsored by the Department of Energy.
The 18 small homes will be open from October 7 to 16, and the teams will
be judged in ten categories, including its architecture and dwelling
design and its ability to maintain heat and humidity at comfortable
levels, power appliances, supply indoor lighting, and power an electric
car. Each home is allowed battery storage and the teams will be judged
on how well they analyzed their home and documented the design process,
as well as their ability to communicate their achievement to the public
through internet sites and public tours.
