The No 4 generating set at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant was stopped for repair last night, with the preliminary agreement of the controllers of the country's power grid, the State Committee for Nuclear Regulation of Ukraine has told UNIAN.

The generating set was stopped to remove a malfunction in the turbine compartment, which led to a steam hole. The malfunction did not affect the radiation level at the plant or on its grounds, and posed no threat to the plant's personnel.

The generating set is planned to resume operation by the end of the day on 26 September.

Of the 15 generating sets at four Ukrainian nuclear power plants, 12 are currently in operation.

Apart from the No 4 generating set at the Zaporizhzhya plant, maintenance is under way at this plant's No 5 generating set and at the No 1 generating set at the South-Ukrainian nuclear power plant.

The No 4 generating set at the Rivne plant resumed operation yesterday after maintenance. The generating set's capacity was raised to about 40 per cent of its nominal capacity. Its capacity was not raised any further due to restrictions of power generation which were introduced by controllers at all nuclear power plants today.

It is planned to stop the No 2 generating set at the Khmelnytskyy nuclear power plant, which was put into operation last August, late tomorrow evening for its first major repair. The repair will last until 5 December, in line with [national nuclear power generating company] Enerhoatom's schedule.
