Mass Electric Customers Can Go Green

Aug 04 - Patriot Ledger, The; Quincy, Mass.

Massachusetts Electric Company customers can voluntarily pay more to ensure that more renewable electricity is used in New England.

Starting last September, the company launched a program called GreenUp, which enables customers to purchase renewable energy from four different companies, at a cost of .95 cents to 2.4 cents per kilowatt hour on top of regular electricity charges.

No one can guarantee the particular electrons flowing through someone's electric lines come directly from a windmill or a solar panel. But purchasing energy through the companies ensures a portion of electricity that would have been generated by fossil plants is displaced by renewable energy.

The companies from which Mass Electric customers can buy green energy from are: CET & Conservation Services Group Inc., 1-800-689- 7957, www.GreenerWattsNewEngland.com; Community Energy, 1-866-WIND- 123, www.CommunityEnergy.biz; Mass Energy Consumers Alliance, 1- 800-287-3950; www.massenergy.com; Sterling Planet, 1-800-473-1362, www.sterlingplanet.com.

NStar Electric has yet to implement a voluntary green energy program for its customers.
