Solar industry group encouraged by support for renewable energy at Democratic Convention ... awaits specifics

by SEIA

"We hope this week's favorable words are followed by a strong action plan to turn our nation's abundant sunlight into energy to fuel our lives."
--Scott Sklar, SEIA's interim Executive Director

As the dust settles from the Democratic Convention in Boston, the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) today applauded solar-friendly provisions in the Democratic Party Platform, but urged both parties to put forth a clear plan of action to drive deployment of solar power across America.

"The Democratic Party Platform recognizes the importance of solar energy to our nation's future," said Scott Sklar, SEIA's interim Executive Director. "But we hope this week's favorable words are followed by a strong action plan to turn our nation's abundant sunlight into energy to fuel our lives."

Among the energy highlights of the Platform Report:

* Calls for "investments to harness ... the sun" as a source of renewable energy;
* "We support tax credits for private sector investment in clean, renewable sources of energy";
* Commitment to make the nation's power systems more "flexible" and "resilient";
* Confirms that "new technologies that protect the environment can create new high-paying jobs"; and
* Will make the federal government a role model in energy use.

The Report of the 2004 Democratic National Convention Standing Committee on Platform ("Platform Report") is available here: http://www.democrats.org/platform/

"We look forward to hearing more from Sen. Kerry and President Bush in the coming days, and hope the Republican Platform takes a page from the strong leadership of GOP Governors like Schwarzenegger and Pataki in promoting solar energy technologies."
