Solar progress for California

Tuesday 24 August 2004
sunGovernor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger has announced legislation to promote solar panelling in housing. The legislation would primarily create the ‘Solar Homes Peak Procurement Account’ for homeowners to get rebates on solar photovoltaic systems and energy bills, and oblige the building industry in the state to offer solar options for homebuyers by 2008.

A public survey earlier in the year found that 87% of Californians supported the solar measures.

"Ultimately, the governor has personally involved himself in this issue which has made a tremendous difference and we look forward to continuing to work with him and the legislature to make sure that California grows its solar homes market," said Bernadette Del Chiaro from NGO Environment California. "The governor's leadership will remain critical to ushering the bill through the legislative process. A lot can still happen in the eleventh hour," she added.
