Global energy security no longer a major concern: IEA's Mandil

Paris (Platts)--2Dec2004

Concern about energy security is no longer a major concern as a result of more
efficient use of oil and increasing utilization of alternative energy sources,
Claude Mandil, head of the Paris-based International Energy Agency, said
Thursday. "I don't think security of supply is worse now than it was 30 years
ago for several reasons. The first is that energy as a whole plays a lesser
role in the economy. Second, generally, there are more alternative solutions--
that means energy coming from difference countries, different origins,
different suppliers or different kinds of fuels to obtain the same result,"
Mandil said.

Mandil said transport remained the major exception as the sector remained almost
totally dependent on oil, which he said was a "big problem." The Organization
for Economic Cooperation and Development in its twice-yearly report this week
said transport was expected to remain the principal consumer of oil, accounting for two-thirds of the growth in oil demand between 2002 and
2030, raising its share of oil consumption by 7 percentage points to 54%.
