Switzerland imports power Oct 03-Sep 04 as hydro output falls

Rome (Platts)--9Dec2004

Switzerland failed to live up to its traditional role as a net exporter of
electricity in the hydro year from Oct 1, 2003 to Sep 30, 2004 when it
recorded a net import of 28GWh, compared with the previous year's export
surplus of 5398GWh. Domestic demand increased by 1.9% to 55.84TWh to set a new
record, according to statistics released Thursday by the Swiss Electricity
Suppliers Association and the Swiss Federal Office of Energy. National
production at the same time fell by 7% to 62.47TWh due to a dry winter. Hydro
production dropped from 38.31TWh to 34.06TWh, or 54.5% of the total, while
production at the country's five reactors fell slightly to 25.49TWh or 41% of
the total. The remaining 4.5% was contributed by conventional thermal plant.
