US power sector, DOE sign accord to cut GHG emission intensity

Washington (Platts)--14Dec2004

Officials with the US power sector and the Department of Energy Monday signed
an agreement designed to lead to voluntary reductions in greenhouse gas
emission intensity over the next 10 years. The leaders of seven organizations
that have formed "Power Partners" signed an umbrella memorandum of
understanding with DOE designed to implement President Bush's goal of reducing
the greenhouse gas emissions intensity of the US economy (measured as
emissions per GDP) 18% by 2012.

The organizations comprising Power Partners are the American Public Power Assn,
Edison Electric Institute, Electric Power Supply Assn, Large Public Power Council,
National Rural Electric Cooperative Assn, Nuclear Energy Institute, and Tennessee
Valley Authority. These entities, representing all of the electric power generation
in the US, have pledged to reduce collectively the power sector's greenhouse gas
emissions intensity by an equivalent of 3-5% (measured as carbon emissions per unit
of electricity produced) below 2000-2002 baseline levels, as measured over the
2010-2012 period.
