US senator calls for solutions to 'looming' natural gas crisis

Washington (Platts)--6Dec2004

US Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Pete Domenici
(Republican-New Mexico) on Monday called for legislative proposals that offer
long-term solutions to what he called the "looming crisis in natural gas
supply and demand." Domenici asked industry, government, public interest
groups and private citizens to submit proposals to the committee by Jan 7,
saying the most promising idea will be discussed at a half-day meeting
tentatively set for Jan 19. Domenici said he and others have been concerned
over tightening gas supplies for the past five years. "Natural gas prices
began climbing sharply in June 2001 and have continued to creep up. Four years
of rising gas prices have forced several manufacturing companies to move
operations overseas where gas is cheaper, resulting in loss of US
manufacturing jobs," the senator said.
