Beckett outlines climate change threat

pollutionEnvironment Secretary Margaret Beckett has spoken of the dangers of ‘unchecked’ climate change, at a conference this week. Coastal erosion, rising temperatures and extreme weather conditions were all outlined as likely outcomes of the global problem.

"Everything from transport, house building to the energy efficiency of public buildings is affected by - and affects - the changing climate,” said Beckett at a pilot regional climate change conference in Buxton.

Highlighting the recently updated report ‘The Potential Impacts of Climate Change in the East Midlands’, the Environment Secretary urged local authorities to develop action plans to combat the problem at a local level by signing the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change. The agreement allows councils to openly state their commitment to delivering an effective climate change programme.

"Climate change may be a global problem, but councils are part of the solution. They must work together with their communities to make a difference - not only to prepare for climate change but also to reduce the emissions that cause it," she added.
