Indian ports hit by Tsunami

London (Platts)--29Dec2004

The tsunami devastation in parts of southeast Asias coastline on Dec. 26 and
its aftermath have seriously affected two ports in Indias peninsular east
coast. Chennai (Madras) port has been closed since the disaster after three
ships collided and there was an oil spill from one ship. At Tuticorin port,
one ship laden with coal lost its moorings. Both the ports handle sizable
quantities of imported coal and also domestic coal carried by coastal ships.
Some of the port installations at both the places have been damaged and are
being repaired on an emergency basis. There have been no reports of other
Asian coal ports being hit.
