Sweden to Shut Down Second Nuclear Reactor

Dec 17 - Xinhua News Agency - CEIS

The Swedish government formally announced on Thursday that it will shut down the disputed Barseback 2 nuclear power plant reactor, Radio Sweden reported.

The move is part of Sweden's program to lessen its dependency on nuclear power over the next 30 to 40 years.

In October, a majority in the Swedish parliament agreed on a strategy for the continued phase out of nuclear power, which still accounts for nearly half of the Scandinavian country's energy supply.

In a statement, the government said that "the terms for the shutdown have been fulfilled and can now be executed."

The second reactor at Barseback, which sits across a narrow waterway from the Danish capital of Copenhagen, will be closed by May 31. The first reactor was closed in 1999.
