Arizona Public Service says blackouts are likely today
Washington (Platts)--20Jul2004

Blackouts in the Phoenix region are likely today because of higher
temperatures and a transmission substation fire that occurred early Tuesday
morning, an Arizona Public Service spokeswoman said. "It is likely this
afternoon that there will be intermittent rolling blackouts," she said. APS is
urging customers in the region to conserve power use, particularly during the
peak hours of 3 pm and 6 pm (MST). The peak load for the Phoenix region Monday
was 6,084 MW. APS expects the peak load for today and the remainder of the
week , and the remainder of the week to remain above 6,000 MW. The fire at the
Deer Valley substation knocked out power to about 50,000 customers in the
Phoenix area. APS said it expects to have customers service restored later
this morning. The outage comes on the heels of the July 4 fire that knocked
out the Westwing substation. The Westwing fire cut capacity flowing into the
region by about 20%. Repairs since the fire have restored about 5% of that
capacity.
