Klamath tribes on the warpath

Jul 14, 2004 - The Herald

NATIVE Americans who are visiting Scotland to protest against ScottishPower could get to put their case to the energy giant ahead of its annual meeting next Friday. They are expected to meet the Glasgow-based utility to discuss the environmental damage they claim its US subsidiary PacifiCorp has caused to the Klamath River in northern California and southern Oregon. The delegation makes the claim that dams operated by PacifiCorp have wrecked 350 miles of historic salmon spawning grounds, degraded water quality and have played a major part in the decline in salmon numbers. Before next week's shareholder meeting, an advanced party representing the Karuk, Yurok, Hoopa and Klamath tribes is planning to visit the fish ladder at Pitlochry in Perthshire to see if the technology could be applied to their homeland.

They claim PacifiCorp has so far ignored their arguments. In May, ScottishPower's annual report revealed PacifiCorp was being sued for $1bn by the tribes.
