Northern Utilities has finished a study for how it plans to clean up environmental contamination from the former Portland Gas Works site at 40 Commercial St. in Portland.

The former gas manufacturing plant along the Fore River operated from 1852 to 1965. A natural gas and propane distribution facility remains on a portion of the 8.9-acre site.

Northern has asked the Maine Public Utilities Commission to approve its cleanup plan, which includes removing liquid tar from the property.

The work will be overseen by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.
