UK likely to fall short of renewables target: Lords report

London (Platts)--15Jul2004

The UK government likely will fail to meet its goal of generating 10% of the
nation's electricity from renewable energy sources by 2010, a report issued by
the British upper house of parliament, the House of Lords, concluded. While
applauding the government for working to cut greenhouse gas emissions and make
the UK's energy supply more secure, the report by the Lords Science and
Technology committee criticized policies that the panel said favor projects
offering a quick return, particularly onshore wind farms. This approach "needs
to be fine tuned" by adding incentives for long-term investment that will make
other renewable energy sources attractive as well, Lord Oxburgh, who chairs
the science and technology committee, said in an interview. The committee also
called on the government to appoint a minister with sole responsibility for
energy policy, boost spending for renewable energy research and development
and consider the potential for large-scale tidal power.
