150 countries sign Bonn declaration supporting renewable energy

Bonn (Platts)--4Jun2004

Ministerial delegations from 150 countries gathered in Bonn on Friday agreed
to a political declaration supporting renewable energy. The declaration,
resulting from four days of discussions at the international renewables 2004
conference in Bonn, acknowledges that "renewable energies, combined with
enhanced energy efficiency, can significantly contribute to sustainable
development, to providing access to energy, especially for the poor, to
mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, reducing harmful air pollutants, thereby
creating new economic opportunities and enhancing energy security through
cooperation and collaboration."

Ministers committed to an "informal action program" which contains 150 actions
so far, with more anticipated in the near future. These include a surprise
declaration by the Chinese delegation this week that it wants to increase the
contribution of renewable energy in its total requirements to 10% by 2010, and
a commitment by the Philippines to double its renewable energy sector by 2010.
