U.S. wind company enters Italian market

ROME, Italy, 2004-06-23 (Refocus Weekly)

The largest electric utility in Italy will purchase 71 wind turbines from GE Energy.

Enel will purchase the 1.5 MW turbines during 2004 and 2005, marking the U.S. company’s first entry into the wind energy market in the European country although it has been active in other energy technologies there for 80 years.

Thirty-eight of the turbines will be installed at the Littigheddu windfarm in Sardinia, which will become one of the largest single installations of turbines in Italy, while five will be used for the re-powering of the existing Collarmele windfarm in Abruzzo by replacing a number of smaller and older turbines.

The remaining 28 turbines will be assigned to future projects.

The government of Italy is supporting renewable energy as part of its commitment to the Kyoto Protocol and the EU goal of generating 22% of Europe's electricity from renewables by 2010. Much of that power is expected to come from wind.

A recent survey by the German Wind Energy Institute says Italy is one of five important future markets for wind energy development. The country has 922 MW of installed wind capacity, with a target of 2,400 MW by 2008.

“We are pleased to be working with Enel, one of the largest international utilities and a leader in renewable energy, to help increase Italy's supply of wind-generated power,” says Steve Zwolinski of GE Energy's wind operations. GE Energy has a service network in Italy that will support the windfarms, and the GE Global Research Center - Europe will open this summer in Germany with a mission to increase the reliability and performance of wind turbines.

GE has installed 2,300 of its 1.5 MW turbines around the world; when combined with its other turbines with rated outputs ranging up to 3.6 MW, it has installed 6,600 turbines with a total capacity of 4,700 MW.

Enel has annual revenue of Euro 31 billion from its 45,000 MW of installed capacity and 30 million electricity customers. In the green power sector, it has 17,000 MW installed in Italy, Spain, North America and Latin America.
