US lawmaker Markey highlights LNG accident casualty estimates

Washington (Platts)--2Jun2004

US Rep. Edward Markey, Democrat-Massachusetts, on Tuesday asked the US Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission to respond to recent liquefied natural gas
accident casualty estimates. Markey highlighted comments on FERC's recent LNG
risk-assessment report, in which the Boston Fire Dept. suggested that as many
as 10,000 casualties would result from a "worst-case" tanker accident or
attack.

Markey called on FERC Chairman Pat Wood III to "move quickly to
provide some answers." Public confidence in LNG "is directly tied to how
seriously the industry takes these questions, and how effective industry and
the regulators are about addressing the legitimate concerns that local fire
departments, police departments, and members of the public have" in the
post-Sept 11 environment. Comments should be considered and, where
appropriate, adopted by FERC before it incorporates any of the report's
findings or recommendations into regulatory proceedings, Markey continued.
