Illinois reactors not affected by earthquake

Washington (Platts)--28Jun2004

Exelon's Illinois nuclear plants were not affected by today's earthquake in
the state, the company said. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) described the
quake, which measured 4.5 on the Richter scale, as "light." The quake was
centered 72 miles southwest of Chicago and occurred around 1 a.m. local time
today, the USGS said. Exelon Nuclear said it declared unusual events at
Dresden, LaSalle, and Quad Cities, as a result of seismic activity in the
area. An unusual event is the lowest of NRC's four categories of emergency
preparedness at nuclear power plants. The unusual events were later
terminated. Walk-downs "confirmed that the seismic activity did not damage
plant equipment or affect plant operations," Exelon Nuclear said. Exelon did
not declare unusual events at Braidwood, Clinton, or Byron, its other Illinois
plants.
