Environmental groups seek to overturn coal plant air permits

Big Stone Gap, Va. (Platts)--23Nov2004

Two environmental groups have asked the Utah Air Quality Board to overturn
decisions by the state Div of Air Quality approving two coal-fired power
plants--a 950-MW addition to the Intermountain Power Project in Delta, and
Nevco Energy's 270-MW plant proposed for Sevier County. In their appeal, the
Sierra Club and Grand Canyon Trust argued the proposed plants pose a threat to
public health and "vistas in Utah's national parks." The groups said they are
challenging two Prevention of Significant Deterioration permits approved last
month by the DAQ.

In a statement, the groups said they "are deeply concerned about the
cumulative impacts these two coal-fired plants will add to the five existing
plants in Utah, as well as two more proposed plants for the Castle Dale and
Bonanza areas. The concerns raised many months ago by our organizations and
the National Park Service were not sufficiently addressed by DAQ," said Rick
Moore with the Grand Canyon Trust. "These parks are national treasures as well
as big engines in the states economy. They deserve better."
