Global methane partnership hopes to save 500-bil cu ft/year gas

London (Platts)--17Nov2004

International cooperation in reducing methane (natural gas) emissions could
recover some 500-bil cu ft/year of gas by 2015, according to the new Methane
to Markets Partnership. Methane to Markets is a US-led project to create a
framework for sharing expertise in the reduction of methane emissions and its
recovery for use as a clean energy source.

Methane contributes 16% of total
global greenhouse gas emissions and is 23 times more potent than carbon
dioxide in trapping heat in the atmosphere. But if it is captured, methane can
be used as a fuel source, adding to national security of energy supplies. The
Methane to Markets partnership held a ministerial launch meeting in the US
capital, Washington, during Monday to Wednesday this week. UK minister Ben
Bradshaw said in a speech to the conference that the UK had cut its methane
emissions 43% from 1990 to 2002, but still felt it had much to learn from
international partners.
