GE, Bechtel set venture on clean-coal power plants

General Electric Co. and Bechtel Corp., the San Francisco engineering and construction company, plan to offer a standardized clean-coal power-plant package that they expect to become competitive with other energy sources by the end of the decade, The Wall Street Journal reported. GE is negotiating with several electric companies -- among them American Electric Power Co. of Columbus, Ohio, and Cinergy Corp. of Cincinnati -- to build the plants. GE, Fairfield, Conn., seeks to create a global market for the costly, environmentally friendly technology, the Journal said.
