A Belgian ship tossed around by typhoon Songda leaked 180 tons of crude oil in south-western Russia, civil defence officials said.

The typhoon that swept northern Japan caused the Cristoforo Colombo to run aground on rocks 50 yards from the port of Kholmsk in the southern Sakhalin region.

Dmitry Berezkin, deputy head of Kholmsk's civil defence and emergency preparedness department, said the rocks punctured three tanks and more than 180 tons of crude and diesel fuel poured out, spreading over three miles. Local residents and employees of Ecoshelf have cleared approximately 450 square yards of beach, he said.

The Cristoforo Colombo is owned by the European Dredging Co. and is on contract to Sapiem, which Sakhalin Energy contracted to construct an ocean pipeline.
