street sceneThe UK Government views changing the behaviour of people and businesses as a key factor in tackling climate change, Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett has announced. Providing leadership and enforcing sustainability will also form central parts of the forthcoming Defra Five Year Strategy.

Speaking at the Environment Agency’s annual meeting in Birmingham, Mrs Beckett said that long-term behavioural changes from all sectors of the public - individuals, companies, communities and the public sector – was the key to achieving sustainable development.

"The Government has been successful in providing catalysts for behaviour changes. By working in partnership with business, we have shown that fairly simple changes in business practices can produce substantial reductions in costs and environmental impacts,” said Mrs Beckett. "But this is just the tip of the long-term behaviour changes we envisage.”

The strategy will be launched in November.
