Iran undertakes underground gas storage project

Storing gas in underground reservoirs will make its export to target markets safer. Hassan Chakeri, official in charge of natural gas storage project at the National Iranian Gas Company, stated that positive outlooks for gas exports was a reason for storing gas in such reservoirs.

"All gas exporting countries have built such reservoirs which enables them to continue export without interruption should a problem occur for the pipeline," he said.

Chakeri stated that storing natural gas, like other oil fuels, is a necessity.

"Due to its high volume, natural gas cannot be stored in surface reservoirs because in that case we would need a lot of reservoirs, which will both occupy a lot of space and will not be economical too," he added.
The official said underground reservoirs are natural structures located a low depth, adding, "Gas stores are kept in such structures throughout the world except for countries like Japan where due to lack of suitable natural structures, natural gas is stored in metal tanks as LNG."
